5 Things that I learned from simple living

Hi there loves,

I hope you are doing well. Today I wanted to share 5 simple things I learned from changing my lifestyle to a more simple one. I used to call this minimalism but at the end of 2019 I changed it to simple living due the fact that I felt restricted to specific amounts and rules. Living simpler gives a broader feeling and is more open to me. I’m glad I made these changes before all the situation we have right now. It has not been easy lately for many of us but learning to live simpler has helped me appreciate the little things even more. That is why I wanted to share 5 simple things that I have learned along the way.

Appreciate what you have right now

When it comes to me and my experience with simple living it thought me to appreciate what I have at the moment. I’m grateful to have clothes to wear, makeup to use, shoes to wear and much more. It made me look at it from a different perspective. Instead of looking for new clothes every time I go out of the house, I appreciate the clothes that I currently have to be able to go out of the house. It made me realize that we do not need things to be happy, we can find happiness everywhere we look as long as you learn to appreciate.

Things are simply things

When we are attached to material things it makes us think that we need material things to be happy, however this is not the case at all. I will take clothes as an example again. I used to think a new shirt would make me feel better and it did at the beginning. When I felt bad I would go out and find a new piece of clothing to make myself feel better. In the dressing room it did and when I bought the piece of clothing it did make me feel accomplished however, when I got home it just got to the closet and sit there for a very long time. Time to time I would try it on and not like how it looks and at the end I donated it. This was not a necessary purchase and I did not like the piece so, I learned to deal with what I was going trough instead of attaching myself to a piece of material thing. Material hings can make our lives easier. we can showcase our personality but they are not everything.

You learn to style/work with what you have

Another thing I learned trough simple living was to become more creative with what I currently own. Whether this was clothes, shoes, bags or anything I could style with, it thought me to be more creative and daring to use something in many different ways. If you are the type of person that does not like to be seen in the same outfit more than one simple living can challenge you to become more creative when it comes to styling your clothes. A different shoe or accessory can make a big difference. You also learn to take better care of your belongings in order to use it more.

Spend money more wisely

Before simple living I used to spend a lot of money on things I did not need, like or used. I used to be the person who would spend money for no reason. This was not good nor did it bring me any benefits. As I grew up I started to learn more about the value of money and saving. Simple living also thought me to spend more wisely because your purchase can also make a difference on the planet. Using what you have for longer and spending less money gives you the opportunity to travel or do things you wanted for so long but did save up for. I learned this in 2015 when I wanted to go on a EUROPE trip. I had to save up money in order to make this trip happen and buying less things was what made the biggest difference. A beautiful memory can have a lot more value compared to a non-essential product.

Don’t be to hard on yourself

Lastly, what I wanted to share was to not be so hard on yourself. Give yourself time and space to learn and grow. I did not learn this in one day, it took me months to learn and realize many things. So if you are starting take your time. If you want to try this lifestyle maybe you can challenge yourself first and than make the changes. I know that this could not work for everybody so share with me what lifestyle do you apply? Do you already live simply? I would love to learn more about lifestyles. I’m personally do not know if I would stay like this, maybe it would change in the future but I’m trying to learn, live happily simple and keeping an open mind to what life could bring for me. I hope you enjoyed today’s post.

  1. Great read! We should definitely appreciate what we have right now. I think it’s easy to get caught up in what we want to have in the future and sometimes we forget to appreciate what’s right in front of us!

  2. Love this post! “Appreciating what I have right now” has been my number 1 way of life for some time now. I can’t express how it’s made my life so much easier. I try to remind my partner of this whenever I see him spiraling out of his mind thinking of something we could’ve done better if more resources were available. It’s a work in progress for both of us

    1. Thank you so much! I already feel so much freedom indeed and whenever I start lacking I start feeling heavy once again. At that moment I know I need to do a refresh. Currently decluttering my stuff again and prepping for a new year free of clutter. Many blessings! -Rachel
